Private healthcare market in rude health

Latvia - doctor money in pocket

Private healthcare is thriving in the UK, according to the latest analysis from Research and Markets.

The Private Healthcare Market Report 2008 indicates that the total UK market for private healthcare increased by 8.1 per cent between 2006 and 2007 and was worth £24.77 billion last year.

In particular, mental health, elderly care homes and acute care have been benefiting from a shift from NHS to private provision.

The report also notes that nearly half of consumers want to benefit from the privileged treatment afforded by private healthcare.

Meanwhile, the Association of British Insurers has confirmed that the number of people with private healthcare is on the rise, with around six million people now being covered.

An industry official told the Thrifty Scot: "The whole issue of cleanliness has shot up the agenda. People don't want to be treated in the sort of hospital where you have to keep on your slippers every time you pop to the bathroom."
