Lunchtime breast enlargements planned

Cytori Therapeutics

A Californian company has unveiled plans to introduce lunchtime breast enlargements across Europe, it has been revealed.

Writing in the publication Chemistry and Industry, Lisa Melton said that the fast-track process, which takes just over an hour, could be introduced by Cytori Therapeutics by the beginning of 2008.

During the procedure, fat is removed from the buttocks or belly using a minor liposuction procedure. The stem cells are then removed and combined with regenerative cells prior to injection into the breast tissue.

According to the company, the breasts take around six months to enlarge and can increase by up to two cup sizes.

Although the procedure may prove popular among cosmetic surgery patients, the company intends to initially focus on patients who want a reconstruction following breast cancer treatment.

The majority of patients diagnosed with breast cancer tend to have breast surgery as their main form of cancer treatment, and many choose to undergo a breast reconstruction afterwards.

However, according to the NHS, 80 per cent of all implant procedures are for cosmetic reasons.
