Sleep 'is vital for hormone regulation'

peaceful sleep

People with sleep disorders have been told that a good night's rest is vital to help maintain the endocrine system.

Marianne Davey, director of the British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association, said that the regulation of hormones that are vital to repair the body's tissue can become impaired if regular sleep patterns are not experienced.

"If we are not sleeping well and are constantly waking during the night the hormones that work by day and those that work by night become confused and work against each other," she explained.

Ms Davey stated that both physical and mental health was dependent on hormones that were released as a person slept, so lying in bed awake would not be beneficial.

Her comments came after a Spanish study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine demonstrated the risk of cardiovascular death in women suffering from sleep apnoea could be reduced by continuous positive airway pressure.
