Sleep 'is important to general health'

Sleep 'is important to general health'

People who suffer with sleep disorders have been told that getting enough rest is an important factor when trying to introduce positive health changes.

Those who suffer with fractured sleep may want to seek treatment, as Jane Druker, Healthy magazine's editor, said that ideally eight hours was needed to allow individuals to be "bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning".

She explained that it regulates both hormones and appetite and could help people to become "happier, healthier and slimmer".

Ms Druker advised people to adopt the same routine each night by winding down with a cup of chamomile tea and listening to a book on tape.

Those looking to make further changes could try meditation, as it can help to lower blood pressure and reduce the amount of bad cholesterol in the body.

According to the Office for National Statistics, 29 per cent of British adults suffer from insomnia, with the condition being more common among women.
