Those suffering with sleep disorders have been told that their condition not only makes them tired, but can also
make them hungry.
Scientists working at Uppsala University in Sweden found that after just one
sleep-deprived night, the neurological area associated with appetite became
more responsive when a person was shown images of food.
The team concluded that sleeping disorders can have a significant impact on the
chances of a person becoming obese.
"It may therefore be important to sleep about eight hours every night to
maintain a stable and healthy body weight," said researcher Christian
Benedict of the Department of Neuroscience at the educational establishment.
He explained that the findings could be even more significant, as sleep
deprivation was a growing problem in modern-day society.
According to Mind, many people worry about not getting enough sleep each night,
but that often that makes it worse. Individuals with sleep disorders should try
to relax and adopt a regular routine, states the charity.
