Women who have
recently given birth should wait until they have been given the all-clear from their GP before
they begin trying to lose weight and start a fitness regime.
This is the advice of Vicky Warr, who advises the BBC and Mothercare about
postnatal exercise. She explained that usually women undergo a check-up from
their GP six to eight weeks after giving birth.
Once the doctor has assessed that there are no complications regarding bleeding
or stitches then it is okay to begin exercising, she said.
However, Ms Warr advised that women should avoid any activities which create
pressure on the pelvic floor, as it will still be recovering from the
pregnancy.
"Following your check-up, literally focus on those abdominal muscles, so
do some functional exercises where you are pulling your abdominals in," Ms
Warr added.
Charlotte Watts, a yoga teacher and author, recently said that the spiritual
exercise can help reduce posture problems associated with pregnancy.
