Lack of funding 'prevents HIV vaccine development'

International HIV/AIDS Alliance

More funding is needed if the problem of HIV is going to be eradicated in the future.

This is the opinion of Dr Gitau Mburu, senior advisor to the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, who believes that proteins which can mediate the spread of infection in the body could be vital to developing a cure for the illness.

He explained that some people are able to become infected by the virus yet, due to the activity of these proteins, they never become ill and hardly need any treatment.

Mr Mburu said if money was invested into research of this HLA – B protein, which was discovered two decades ago, then the development of a vaccine could also be possible.

"These discoveries have the potential to open up new avenues of targeted vaccine and drugs to fight HIV," he added.

This comes after Lisa Power, policy director at Terrence Higgins Trust, noted sexual health education had improved significantly in the UK.
