Fertility treatment could be
aided by small changes in lifestyle.
This is the opinion of Dr Marilyn Glenville, a nutritionist who specialises in
women's health. She said that it was now widely known that a salubrious diet
and lifestyle were conducive to conceiving, but many people still failed to
realise that some foods can actually lower fertility.
Dr Glenville identified both alcohol and caffeine as two substances that are
capable of doing this.
"The most important nutrients for fertility are zinc, folic acid,
selenium, vitamin E, vitamin C, [and] Omega 3 fatty acids," she stated.
Dr Glenville also explained that male fertility could be further boosted by the
consumption of two amino acids - arginine and carnitine.
According to the latest statistics from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology
Authority, 45,264 women received a total of 57,652 IVF or ICSI treatments in
2010 – a rise of 5.9 per cent compared to the previous year.
