is pleased to announce Gill Burns as the new Director of Nursing at BMI Mount
Alvernia Hospital in Guildford. Gill’s appointment at the Harvey Road hospital
will allow the facility to build on its position as one of the main providers
of private healthcare in Surrey. This latest appointment will help strengthen
the continued expansion of the hospital’s services and treatments that are
available to Surrey residents.
Gill studied
nursing at the former Ashford Hospital, now Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals
NHS Trust in Chertsey, graduating in 1989. Since then she has experienced life
at the front line of healthcare, both private and public.
Gill takes up
the top nursing role at BMI Mount Alvernia Hospital with a very established
career to date. Gill started her career as a staff nurse at Ashford Hospital
working in gynaecology and general surgery, before progressing to senior staff
nurse post at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey It was in Chertsey that Gill
developed her interest in cancer care and studied for a qualification in
Colorectal Cancer Care. She then spent a short while at Princess Alice Hospice
in Esher to gain experience in palliative care. From here Gill went into the
private healthcare sector working at The Princess Christian’s Hospital and BMI
The Princess Margaret Hospital both in Windsor. Gill joined BMI Princess
Margaret Hospital as a Sister on the Surgical Unit and worked her way up to
becoming the Outpatient Services Manager. During her time at BMI The Princess
Margaret Hospital Gill had the opportunity to study for the breast care course
which was used to help set up the breast care service at The BMI The Princess
Margaret Hospital. This service is still available and successful at the
hospital today.
In 2009 Gill
secured the role of Director of Operations at BMI Mount Alvernia Hospital where
she was responsible for the Consulting Room Suite including health screening,
cardiology and pre-assessment, Patient Services, Medical Secretaries and
consultant engagement. Gill also coordinated various projects including driving
clinical excellence and pathology development.

nurse, a carer and a strategist. Gill has played a crucial role as part of the
management team here in Guildford over the last couple of years and her
elevation to Director of Nursing will allow us to build on our solid

and maintain a hospital to be proud of for our patients and staff.”
