Shameless actor reveals 6 stone weight loss on Loose Women

Tina Malone
As the latest series of Shameless starts this week, viewers will be fascinated to watch lead actor Tina Malone literally fade away as the series progresses…  Tina, who plays the tough Mimi Maguire, had a gastric band fitted 9 months ago at The Hospital Group and has lost 6 stone already since it was fitted.

2 years ago she weighed in at 19 stone 2.  A gastric balloon kick-started her weight loss, but a year ago she chose the gastric band as a more permanent weight loss tool.  She weighs just 10 stone 4 and at just 5 foot 2 her personal target is to get down to 8 stone.

She appeared on Loose Women this week to share her story with Kate Thorton and the girls.  Tina looked healthy and radiant and decidedly slimmer than she appears at the beginning of this series of Shameless.

Tina said “I’ve lost 6 stone 4 lbs  now, since having a gastric band.  It didn’t just save my life, it’s changed my life in every way.  You do have to work with the band to get the results”.

The gastric band reduces Tina’s appetite, so she feels fuller for longer and therefore eats less.  She’s also learned to choose healthier foods and started an exercise regime.  Being married to a personal trainer is a good incentive to start working out.  Tina says “We met on a book camp and we’re actually starting a boot camp later this year.  He’s ex-army and a personal trainer.  It’s a great kick-start – you do feel better”.

So how has the weight loss worked with her on-screen character?

“Shameless have been fantastic and accommodated the weight loss and incorporated it in the episodes.  The disadvantage is you get more sex on screen (you get more at home too!).  It’s been a really big change because Mimi’s become single and had more relationships, which as an actor with 20 years still doesn’t sit well me.  But losing weight lends itself to having more relationships.”

Story lines for Mimi will be very interesting this series.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group said: “Having bariatric surgery can make a huge difference to a person’s life. Whilst it’s not a quick fix or an easy option, the results a gastric band produces can change the way a person lives for the better.  The health benefits are enormous.  As Tina herself has found, things like diabetes can literally just go as patients reach a healthier weight.

“It’s not just about dropping dress sizes, though the results there are remarkable and very noticeable.  The gastric band can allow you to lead a much fuller lifestyle, as well as giving patients new found confidence and self esteem.”
