Postnatal recovery period important

post natal recovery
The postnatal recovery period is important for a mother's health and for the health of her next child.

Emma Cannon, fertility advisor and acupuncturist, said: "How a woman recovers in the month following childbirth will have a bearing on her own health and also on the health of any subsequent children."

Ms Cannon's comments are backed up by recent research published in the journal Pediatrics, which found that children born after shorter intervals between pregnancies are at an increased risk of having autism.

Pregnancies spaced less than one year apart showed the highest risk of the mental condition.

However, Ms Cannon added that the general health and age of a woman will also have a bearing on her postnatal health and that of her children.

"A younger woman could easily have another baby fairly quickly without much trouble, but an older mother and of course one who has less biological time left, needs longer to recover," she explained.
