Hormones 'affect obesity treatment'

overweight women

Recent research could help people facing obesity treatment by advising them of their tendancies before they embark on a diet.

Published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, the study revealed that people with the highest levels of leptin and lowest levels of ghrelin are the most likely to regain weight they lose through dieting.

The scientists looked at 104 overweight people who were following a hypocaloric diet.

They discovered that after eight weeks, those who had regained more than ten per cent of the weight initially lost were seen to have higher levels of leptin and lower levels of ghrelin.

Ana Belen Crujeiras, lead author of the research and a doctor at the University Hospital Complex of Santiago, explained: "There are patients who are susceptible to and others who are resistant to the benefits of a diet.

"It seems the way each patient responds to treatment is predetermined by their own characteristics."
