Five a day 'improves looks'

People who get their recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day are more attractive than their counterparts who do not eat as healthily.

 

This is according to research conducted at Bristol University.

 

Published in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour, the study revealed that fruit and vegetables help to achieve a healthy golden glow.

 

The team also found that those who followed these healthy diets tended to have a higher presence of red and yellow antioxidants, known as carotenoids, which play a role in supporting the immune system and fertility.

 

Cartenoids are commonly found in foods including yellow and red peppers, spinach, apricots and melons.

 

Lead researcher Dr Ian Stephen commented: "Most people in the West think that the best way to improve your skin colour is to get a suntan.

 

"But our research shows that eating lots of fruit and vegetables is actually more effective."
