Strong coloured foods, such as berries, are particularly effective at protecting skin.
This is according to Sally Penford, education manager for the International Dermal Institute.
Ms Penford explained that many red fruits provide ample supplies of antioxidants.
"Any highly coloured fruit, pomegranates, red berries, blueberries, anything with a strong colour in nature is usually rich in antioxidants that will help to protect your skin against free radical damage, and free radicals are something that contribute towards the aging process," she added.
The comments come after the University of Bristol published research revealing that people who eat more fresh fruit and vegetables appear to be healthier than those who have a suntan.
Researchers asked volunteers to adjust the computer-generated images of faces to make them look as healthy as possible.
A skin colour enhanced by carotenoids, red and yellow antioxidants commonly found in fruit and vegetables, was deemed to be the most attractive.
