75th anniversary for British Dietetic Association

British Dietetic Association

On Monday 24 January 2011, the British Dietetic Association (BDA) celebrates a very special birthday – its 75th!

On Friday 24 January 1936, the BDA held its very first meeting in the Grand Committee Room at St Thomas’ Hospital, Westminster Bridge Road in London.  To mark this historic date, the BDA will return to the location of its first meeting and hold its 289th Council meeting there between 11am and 4pm, followed by a special reception at 5pm.

At the first meeting, Miss Margery Abrahams was nominated and elected as the BDA’s very first Chairman and her first act in this role was to ask the meeting if they wanted to form the British Dietetic Association, which they voted upon and agreed.

Speaking ahead of next week’s meeting, the present and 38th Chairman of the BDA, Helen Davidson, said: “I am extremely proud of my profession and I am also proud to be the Chairman of the British Dietetic Association.  The Association is steeped in history and next week’s Council meeting will be a very special day indeed.

“I am confident that if our first Chairman, Miss Margery Abrahams, was still with us, she would be over the moon to see the British Dietetic Association in such good health.

“It’s important that we work together as dietitians and with partners to address the issues that are facing us now and the issues that will continue to in the future.  Malnutrition and obesity, for example, are just two worrying concerns that impact on the quality of so many lives in the UK.

“I know that the whole Council and BDA staff will join me in celebrating our 75th anniversary on the 24th January.”
