Pomegranate advice cautioned for cancer patients

Breakthrough Breast Cancer

The treatment of breast breast cancer with pomegranate juice is not to be relied on yet, according to a cancer charity.

Dr Caitlin Palframan of Breakthrough Breast Cancer said that the variety in our diets meant that "separating out the individual effects of one part of our diet on breast cancer risk is difficult to do".

Her comments come after Shiuan Chen, director of the City of Hope's division of tumour cell biology, published a report in Cancer Prevention Research which detailed the possible benefits of pomegranates in tackling breast cancer.

Speaking of his study, Mr Chen said: "By suppressing the production of oestrogen, urolithin B and other phytochemicals found in pomegranates can prevent hormone-responsive breast cancer tumours from growing."

He added: "Pomegranate intake may be a viable strategy for preventing breast cancer."

But Dr Palframan said: "Although this study is interesting, long-term research will be needed in humans to understand whether pomegranate juice could help reduce breast cancer risk.

"However, we do know that you can reduce your risk of breast cancer by maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol consumption and exercising regularly."
