Expatriates living in Spain have been advised to seek out private health insurance.
British expatriates living in Spain have been advised not to rely on the limited free health care available in the country through the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
Expat advice website, Shelter Offshore, has recommended expats to take out private health insurance, as not all Britons abroad will be covered under the Spanish healthcare system.
Shelter Offshore added that further problems were arising as Spanish officials were claiming that Brits were "draining the system" by using resources to which they were not entitled.
Expatriates living in Spain who are not intending on working but are under the age of retirement (60 for women and 65 for men) are not eligible for free healthcare in the country.
Those over the age of retirement and people who are working and paying taxes in Spain will receive free state healthcare.
