An increasing number of Britons are choosing to go
abroad for rehabilitation treatment.
The Stepping Stones clinic in South Africa has reported that around 40 per cent of its clients now come from the UK in order to take advantage of cheaper treatment.
A month at the South African clinic can cost the same as a week in a comparative UK treatment centre, leading many clients to choose the foreign option and take longer over their recovery.
The first month consists of a primary care programme, while an optional second month provides a "bridge between treatment and the real world".
Peter Powis, Stepping Stones co-founder and clinical psychologist, commented on the advantages of a second month of treatment: "While in a safe environment, it's a chance to experiment with new ways of being and practice the tools of recovery to cope with the challenges of real life."
Rehabilitation clinics offer treatment and support for sufferers of addiction to substances such as alcohol or drugs as well as habits, like gambling.
