More awareness needed for bowel cancer

More awareness is needed to protect Britons from the dangers of bowel cancer, according to one doctor.

While bowel cancer is Britain's second biggest cancer killer, Dr Chris Steele has warned that Britons remain largely unaware of bowel cancer.

Speaking on behalf of the Beating Bowel Cancer 'Be Loud Be Clear' campaign, Dr Steele hoped to push up screening rates.

Dr Steele said that the major campaigns for breast cancer, cervical cancer and skin cancer have eclipsed the dangers of bowel cancer.

But the new campaign is increasing awareness rates with 55 per cent of the population participating in the screening program.

However, this figure needs to rise to 77 per cent in order to bring numbers to the same levels as breast and cervical cancer campaigns.

Bowel cancer can present symptoms such as passing blood and intense tiredness.
