Patients urged to consider private dental insurance

Consumers who are unable to access an NHS dentist should consider private dental insurance, an expert has claimed.

According to a recent survey for the Citizens Advice Bureau, one third of people in the UK go without treatment as they are unable to register with an NHS dentist.

Millions have waited for more than 20 months for an appointment and then either paid for private treatment or simply gone without.

Private dental insurance is an alternative option for consumers and their families, according to Brian Mulreanny, managing director of health insurance firm Essential Healthcare.

Mr Mulreanny said that the figures show how hard it can be to maintain dental health.

"Inaccessible dental care has slowly been getting worse with more and more turning to costly emergency private dentistry after being unable to find a dentist willing to accept NHS patients," he revealed.

"With UK dentistry the most expensive in Europe, it pays to shop around for a good value private health insurance policy for dental health, especially for those on a lower income who often find themselves bearing the brunt of the dental crisis," he added.
