Obesity surgery may treat diabetes

diabetic

Obesity surgery can help to reverse type-2 diabetes, Australian researchers have found.

A study at Monash University, Melbourne, found that patients who underwent obesity surgery were far more likely to go into remission from diabetes than those who attempted to lose weight through non-surgical means.

Seventy-three per cent of patients who underwent obesity surgery went into remission from diabetes within two years of having the procedure, compared to just 13 per cent of patients who received conventional weight loss therapy.

The researchers, led by Dr John Dixon, have published their findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association and suggest that "intensive weight loss therapy may be a more effective first step in the management of diabetes than simple lifestyle change".

They concluded: "This study presents strong evidence to support the early consideration of surgically induced loss of weight in the treatment of obese patients with type-2 diabetes."
