Critical illness insurance has become such a success that it is now one of the biggest protection policies in the UK, its creator has claimed.
Dr Marius Barnard, who introduced the product in 1983, has commented that it has changed for the better, expanding from originally only covering four conditions and now including conditions such as functional disability.
He explained that this is one of the developments he never thought would happen, as the product now includes the diagnosis of such illnesses, naming multiple sclerosis as one of the newly-covered conditions.
He remarked: "If critical illness cover removes the threat of losing your home and possessions due to a critical illness then that is the greatest achievement of the product."
12 million adults and children are currently covered by critical illness insurance in the UK.
