Hospital staff celebrate 25 years and 25,000 patients

Staff and consultants at BMI The London Independent Hospital have recently paid tribute to Annie Ollivierre-Smith and Vina Kavia, two members of the hospital’s cardiology team, who this month celebrated 25 years at the hospital. Annie and Vina, who have worked at the hospital since it opened back in 1986 also marked the event with the news that they have, so far, treated over 25,000 patients.

But Annie, who is the hospital’s Cath Lab Manager and who works alongside some of the UK’s leading cardiologists, was keen that the focus remains on the real issue, cardiac disease, one of the leading causes of death in England and Wales. Annie commented, “While 25 years and 25,000 patients is an amazing achievement, for Vina and I our biggest goal has yet to be reached and that is making sure everyone is aware of the issues surrounding cardiac disease. More still needs to be done to raise awareness, as through simple steps such as, quitting smoking, taking more exercise and eating more healthily, a persons risk of developing heart disease can be significantly reduced.  Everyday at The London Independent Hospital we see men, women and families who are affected as a result of heart disease and more needs to be done to increase awareness around the main causes of the disease. With this increased awareness we will be able to save thousands of lives across the UK each year and that will truly be something worth celebrating.”

In 1986 The London Independent Hospital conducted relatively minor heart operations while in 2011 interventional cardiologists at the hospital are now able to carry out some of the most pioneering and innovative cardiac procedures of their kind. These include the most advanced forms of minimally invasive treatments such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation, an alternative to open heart surgery for high-risk patients suffering from aortic stenosis or conventional surgical valve implant.

The London Independent Hospital is proud to have served the local community for the last 25 years, supporting GPs and, occasionally, helping out local NHS Trusts with a wide range of medical needs. “The London Independent Hospital is a facility which the people of east London and the wider London community should be extremely proud of,” commented Kirsty Baker, Executive Director at BMI The London Independent Hospital.

“We are truly proud to have Annie and Vina as part of our team. Their knowledge, experience and expertise enriches both our and our patient’s lives everyday. But Annie and Vina are just one part of a whole team of staff, consultants and nurses who are dedicated to our patients and their care. Our consultants have been recognised internationally, and our patients have travel to the hospital from all over the world to see them. We are extremely proud to have been serving the people of east London for 25 years and as we face the challenges ahead - a tough climate, a growing population and a healthcare system that needs support - we have lots to be optimistic about. As we move forward we will continue improving both our services, treatments and medical outcomes to ensure the delivery of a truly world-class service to our local community,” Kirsty concluded.
