Eating a lot of food with high levels of processed sugars could increase the risk of developing heart disease, it has been claimed.
A study conducted by researchers from the Emory University School of Medicine and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in Georgia, found that 'bad' cholesterol levels were higher for people who ate a lot of the sugars.
Dr Miriam Vos, a co-author on the report, commented: "Just like eating a high-fat diet can increase your levels of triglycerides and high cholesterol, eating sugar can also affect those same lipids."
She added that people should take a closer look at the amount of sugar in their diet and consider ways by which they can reduce their intake in order to benefit their long-term health.
A recent report from the British Heart Foundation, Diabetes UK and Cancer Research UK, urged people in Britain to be aware of the health risk of carrying a lot of excess fat around the stomach.
'Beer bellies' and 'muffin tops' are higher in oestrogen and can increase the risk of heart disease, cancer and Type 2 diabetes, the charities claimed.
