Researchers have proven one of the biggest dieting theories… DON’T skip breakfast if you want to lose weight and stay healthy, because there’s a lot of truth in that old saying that “a good breakfast sets you up for the day”.
A healthy protein-rich breakfast makes you feel fuller for longer, which reduces the urge to snack through the day. Missing breakfast is associated with unhealthy snacking and overeating, weight gain and obesity.
Heather Leidy of Missouri University commented: “Everyone knows that eating breakfast is important, but many people still don’t make it a priority. ”
The University of Missouri team of researchers used brain-scanning technology as well as questionnaires to measure hunger/appetite in teens who skipped breakfast following a separate study which showed that 60% of teens miss breakfast daily.
Those having breakfast felt fuller throughout the morning, while those following the higher protein breakfast had even less hunger and also reduced snacking/treating tendencies.
“Incorporating a healthy breakfast containing protein-rich foods can be a simple strategy for people to stay satisfied longer, and therefore, be less prone to snacking,” Leidy said. “People reach for convenient snack foods to satisfy their hunger between meals, but these foods are almost always high in sugar and fat and add a substantial amount of calories to the diet. These findings suggest that a protein-rich breakfast might be an effective strategy to improve appetite control and prevent overeating in young people.”

After weight loss surgery, we work closely with our patients on an individual basis to help them to establish good eating patterns. This means regular meals, sensible portion sizes and good food choices, including protein, frut/veg and carbohydrate. We always advocate daily breakfast and we suggest a series of breakfast options in our suggested menus which patients receive in their literature from us.
