Harley Street goes green

The world famous medical community around London’s Harley Street will have an altogether healthier way to transport medical items in 2008.

The Medical courier and logistics company, Premier Medical Logistics are launching a unique courier service which covers the whole of Harley Street and surrounding areas.  For a fixed charge they will pick up and deliver to locations within the Electric Medical Mile using one of their carbon neutral electric vans.

The company’s Head of Business Development Barney Green says: “Our electric vans are perfectly suited to making light deliveries over short distances without harming the environment”.

The company use the Mega Electric Van which is becoming a familiar site around London, Food Retailer Prêt a Manger use them to deliver their sandwiches and the Van won the Green Fleet Electric Vehicle of the Year in 2006.

With a loading capacity of 2-3m³ and payload of up to 530kg, it offers plenty of room. However the vans top speeds of 30mph, charging time of 9 hours and 50 miles autonomy means it can only function as a commercial vehicle within urban environments.

Mr. Green continues “As a company we recognize the importance of providing our customers with ways of reducing their C02 emissions. Our vans are fully equipped to carry Laboratory Supplies & Consumables, Pathology Specimens, Scans/X-Rays, Medical Records, and general mail and stationary”

Electric Vans qualify for, free road tax, no congestion charge and free parking in many London locations.

Within Private and NHS sector hospitals and laboratories there is an increasing demand to demonstrate ‘best value’ from logistics budgets and more and more Hospitals and Laboratories are weighing up the benefits of using electric vans on a contract basis.

“If you are required to make regular pick up and deliveries within a 1 to 3 mile radius, in my experience a contract Electric Van will almost certainly provide a financial as well as environmental saving” says Mr. Green
