The risk of developing type 2 diabetes could be cut by eating green leafy vegetables.
This is according to a recent study conducted by students at Leicester University.
Led by Melanie Davies, professor of diabetic medicine at the university, the research found that eating a portion and a half of green vegetables a day could reduce the risk of the disease by as much as 14 per cent.
The professor commented: "People like very specific health messages.
"We know that intake of fruit and vegetables is important, but this study suggests that green leafy vegetables seem to be particularly important in terms of preventing diabetes."
More than 223,000 people were involved in the study, which has been published online in the British Medical Journal.
Despite the findings, Professor Davies reminded the public that it is still recommended that people eat a variety of at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
