Sleep 'vital to health'

Sleep 'is important to general health'

Those with sleep deprivation problems have been told that their condition can have wide-spread adverse health effects.

Lisa Artis, spokeswoman for The Sleep Council, said a regular and adequate sleep pattern was as important to health as exercise or nutrition.

"We need a good night's sleep to ensure we're feeling fit, thinking sharply and to give us the appetite and enthusiasm to make the most of everyday living," she stated.

Ms Artis explained that sleep problems were common and millions of people around the world suffered with the effects of apnoea and other conditions.

These include finding it harder to make decisions, having shorter temperatures and slower reflexes.

She explained that these can often be dangerous, especially if the patient is driving or has to operate heavy machinery.

According to the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the amount of sleep a person needs depends on their age, but most adults require eight hours a night.
