The focus of
obesity treatment and management in the
UK needs to be centred on preventative measures.
Tam Fry, spokesman for the National Obesity Forum and chairman of the Child
Growth Foundation, said that more resources need to be assigned to improve the
diet of the British public and ensuring they participate in regular exercise,
as this was the most effective way of combating the situation.
He believes that changes need to be implemented in the younger generations to
prevent the current trend of rising obesity rates continuing.
Mr Fry explained that weight problems in pregnant women were a particularly
cause for concern.
"It actually leads towards obesity in their newborn babies and that is the
beginning of the downward spiral," he commented.
According to the World Health Organization, a person with a body mass index
(BMI) of more than 25 is overweight, while those with a BMI higher than 30 are
obese.
