A new study will be
undertaken to ascertain which type of
obesity surgery is the most
effective.
Obesity is a growing problem in the UK with a government-commissioned foresight
report revealing that if current trends continue, then by 2050, 60 per cent of
men and 50 per cent women in the country will be obese.
Professor Jane Blazeby, consultant upper GI surgeon in the School of Social and
Community Medicine at the University of Bristol, said currently patients who do
not respond to other treatment methods undergo either gastric bypass or gastric
banding procedures.
The BY-BAND report, led by professor Blazenby, will compare the weight loss and
quality of life changes that occur in patients for up to three years after they
receive one of the operations.
It is thought this process will test around 700 obesity patients in total and
anyone referred for obesity surgery can opt to take part in the study.
