Cosmetic surgery becomes more popular

Cosmetic procedures are more popular than ever in the UK, according to new figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).

The group found that the number of surgical procedures conducted in 2011 was 5.8 per cent higher than the previous year, with every single type of procedure seeing an increase during the period.

Male tummy tucks – medically known as abdominoplasty – saw the biggest rise in 2011, with the total number growing by 15 per cent.

"It is also not surprising to note a considerable rise in treatments such as tummy tucks and liposuction when there has been an increase in people undergoing obesity treatment," said Fazel Fatah, president of BAAPS.

He explained that often, those who have lost a lot of weight are left with excess skin which can only be removed by surgical means.
