The British
Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has stated that problems
caused by ruptured PIP implants can easily be addressed by fully-trained
medical staff.
Damaged breast implants have the potential to cause granulomas – a condition
caused by a reaction to silicone that can result in lumps which form around the
breast.
"Any qualified plastic surgeon can easily address these issues, make the appropriate decisions and manage
arrangements for investigation in an effective manner – it is part of standard
training," said consultant plastic surgeon and BAAPS president Fazel
Fatah.
The authority took the step to reassure patients about the standard procedure
after it came to its attention that unscrupulous clinics were claiming they did
not have the skills to perform the operation.
Former BAAPS president Nigel Mercer added that surgeons who refused to perform
the procedure should not be advertising themselves as qualified.
BAAPS recently issued a statement claiming that patients who are worried about
their implants should seek a consultation with their surgeon or GP.
