Peter Bullamore’s knee had been plaguing him for months. Badly swollen and cripplingly painful, day-to-day activities had become a struggle. His job as a labourer at a Scottish engineering firm was quickly turning into an impossible task and eventually Peter was forced to take sick leave. Peter says, “The pain was excruciating. I could barely walk, let alone work properly – my job involves being on my feet all day so it was unbearable.”
His employer – Micron Eagle Hydraulics Ltd - has a Westfield cash plan in place, allowing staff to claim back the cost of consultations and other healthcare procedures. Peter says, “I was over the moon when I realised that my employer’s cash plan could help get my knee sorted. I was able to see a specialist and get my knee examined quickly, without the hassle of long waiting lists and without worrying about the cost.”
Peter was suffering from a severe cartilage problem and needed arthroscopic surgery – a minimally invasive procedure commonly used for orthopedic problems. The waiting and recovery time would usually have resulted in Peter needing to take as long as three months sickness absence, however as his employer had introduced Westfield’s additional Surgery Choices benefit to its package, the problem was remedied quickly. He used the Surgery Choices benefit to claim back the cost of having the operation privately and was back at work within a month.
Lesley Pike at Micron Eagle Hydraulics comments, “By using the plan to claim back for both his consultation and operation, Peter was able to undergo treatment privately and enjoy a speedy recovery, which was a huge bonus not just for him but for us as a company too.”
