Brits advised against herbal obesity treatment

Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency

People might want to look into different obesity treatments after it has been claimed that an herbal weight loss product comes with severe risks.

According to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), using Herbal Flos Lonicerae can result in a number of undesirable side effects.

Richard Woodfield, head of herbal medicines policy at the MHRA, said that since 2005 the board had discovered over 280 examples of "so-called 'herbal' or 'natural' products" that had been adulterated with random quantities of powerful pharmaceutical products.

Suggesting that Herbal Flos Lonicerae could be one of these, he explained that "such products pose a real risk to the public".

This particular weight loss product is widely available in Chinese medicine outlets in the UK and over the internet.

But one patient has been hospitalised following its use, while several others have experienced palpitations, insomnia, severe gastritis and abdominal pain following its use.
