Bowel cancer 'easily cured with early detection'

Bowel & Cancer Research

Early detection of bowel cancer can result in the majority of cases being cured.

This is according to recent comments from Deborah Gilbert, head of development for Bowel & Cancer Research.

Ms Gilbert said: "Bowel cancer, at the same time as being the second biggest cancer killer, is one of the easiest to cure when diagnosed early because it can be successfully dealt with surgically.

"If caught early nine in ten people can survive, if caught too late one in two people will die."

The comments follow the launch of the government's first ever cancer awareness campaign, which aims to encourage people to notice the early signs and symptoms of bowel cancer.

Ms Gilbert added that it would help people's health if they were willing to discuss bowel problems with their GP openly.

According to figures from Cancer Research, bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK.

It tends to be more of a problem among older people, with eight out of every ten cases occurring in people aged 60 and above.
