From April, the immigration authorities will not issue or renew a visa for expatriates living in Japan, unless the expatriate provides proof of current or future enrolment in the country’s national health insurance system.
Expatriates can buy international health insurance to supplement the struggling Japanese health system. But they must still buy the cover offered by the national health insurance system.
