IVF babies 'at risk of complications'

Tommy's

A baby charity has suggested that people who receive certain kinds of fertility treatment could be at greater risk of complications when the child is born.

Andrew Shennan, professor of obstetrics for Tommy's the baby charity said: "Overall people who have pregnancies with IVF do have more complications."

However, Professor Shennan noted that the problems may arise from "underlying risk factors in that group of women" rather than as a direct result of IVF treatment.

The professor made the comments following a report from the journal Human Reproduction, which revealed that the risk of still-birth among fertile and sub-fertile women who conceived using IVF was 3.7 per thousand and 5.4 per thousand respectively.

Children conceived using the help of IVF have been the focus of another recent study, published in the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, which found that more complication arose in twins who were born following IVF treatment. .
