A report from the Vitality Show and sleep experts MetroNaps has revealed that the number of people getting the recommended amount of sleep has fallen from 26 per cent to 19 per cent over the last five years.
Notably, there has been an increase in the number of people who are sleeping for six hours or less a night, with figures rising from 12 to 16 per cent.
Certain areas of the country, particularly London, experienced even more worrying levels of sleep, with 42 per cent of people in the capital surviving on less than five hours a sleep a night.
Jessica Alexander, spokesperson for the Sleep Council, commented: "What is the case is that we are increasingly trying to get by on less and less sleep as life has become more and more 24/7. That has made us do things that are not very good for us."
She added: "Sleep is important for performance for mood and for health - physical health. By short-changing on it you are going to make life tougher."
