British engineers have designed a new set of replica joints for use in hip replacement procedures, it has been reported.
Experts at Exeter University used advanced computer design systems to develop a set of ten hip joint models, each with a different degree of bone loss.
This should enable surgeons to be more familiar with the kind of damage they might see once they begin to operate on a patient.
The university's Mike Felstead told the Exeter Express & Echo: "The ultimate goal of these technologies is to rapidly deliver bespoke joint replacements and implants."
The joints were developed in collaboration with surgeons at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital's Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre.
Consultant orthopaedic surgeon Jonathan Howell revealed: "The university was able to build me a model of a patient's pelvis based on a CT scan and then I used this model to plan the operation.
"It was extremely helpful in this complex case to be able to see the hip in three dimensions and it enabled me to predict which equipment I would need."
