Spire Cardiff launches new stroke service

Spire Healthcare

Spire Cardiff Hospital has launched a new service to help reduce the number of people dying from strokes.

An estimated 150,000 people have a stroke every year in the UK, making it the third most common cause of death.

However, many major strokes could be prevented by intervening when a person experiences a transient ischemic attack (TIA), which commonly occurs during the two weeks leading up to a stroke.

Cardiff's new TIA and Stroke Prevention Clinic will provide patients with an assessment and consultation within two hours, offering a same-day prognosis and helping to reduce the prevalence of stroke.

Susan Hill, a consultant vascular surgeon at the new private stroke clinic, said that it is vital for anyone experiencing a TIA to be screened as quickly as possible.

"Too often we hear of people who suffer a TIA having to wait weeks before being clinically assessed," she revealed.

"During this time many experience a life-threatening stroke. The new service offers people speedy access to expert care."
