Bupa welcomes homecare support findings

Stroke Rehabilitation

Bupa Care Homes has welcomed a report from the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI), which found that under-funded services are failing to support older people in their own homes.

The CSCI found that many frail elderly people are 'signposted' to voluntary services and some are left to cope with everyday life on their own, leaving them trapped in their own home.

Only the most frail receive home visits from care workers or meals on wheels, the report found.

Dr Clive Bowman, medical director of Bupa Care Service, commented: "The lack of resources to support people in their own home means that the health of many older people, and those who care for them, is suffering."

Dr Bowman noted that many new residents in care homes demonstrate a "significant improvement" in physical and mental wellbeing - a fact that he claimed was partly due to the inadequacy of care they had received in their own homes.

"Older people's care suffers from chronic under-funding across the board and the government must address this in the Green Paper it's planning this year," he insisted.
