Private clinics defend health MOTs

Healthcare Now

Health MOTs are slowly being introduced on the NHS, but the assessments have long been available at private clinics across the UK.

For a few hundred pounds, patients can pay to be thoroughly examined and tested for cholesterol, diabetes, and even the early stages of cancer.

Terry Brown, director of Healthcare Now, told the Scotsman that health MOTs are a "valuable service", as they can provide early detection of diseases, as well as reassurance for healthy people.

"A lot of people who have these checks are perfectly healthy and show no symptoms of anything. It's more about peace of mind," Mr Brown claimed.

The director said that the average cost for a health MOT at the clinic is £250, with prostate screening costing £150 and testicular screening £180.

"I think it's worth it, especially for things like ovarian cancer or cervical cancer which, if detected early, are more treatable. It's about being proactive," Mr Brown added.

Health screening is available at private clinics throughout the UK and generally involves a full medical history and lifestyle questionnaire, blood tests to detect cholesterol and diabetes, as well as blood pressure, height and weight measurements.
