Between January 2000 and October 2005 Scottish Widows paid out over £95 million in critical illness claims.
18% of claims were declined with 41% of these due to non-disclosure and 58% for not meeting the policy definitions.
Scottish Widows have also set up a Claims Panel to review all provisionally borderline claims. The panel consists of protection experts and non experts independent of the usual claims team to review cases before a final decision is reached as a part of their Treating Customers Fairly programme.
