An expert in dentistry has advised consumers who are considering whitening their own teeth to think again as they could cause costly damage.
According to Dr Prav Solanki, founder of the Cosmetic Dentistry Guide, dentists are being confronted with an increasing number of patients who have damaged their teeth and gums as a result of dodgy home whitening advice.
He said that while people may be trying to save money, they have to know where to draw the line.
"Some over-the-counter products are fine in principle but without the expert guidance of a dentist, you could be causing damage that will cost you more in the long run," Dr Solanki revealed.
Of particular concern are the large number of YouTube videos offering suggestions for DIY tooth whitening procedures, some of which are "irresponsible and dangerous", he warned.
The expert advised: "When it comes to whitening, the message is simple - don't try this at home."
According to the Cosmetic Dentistry Guide, professional teeth whitening is superior as the dentist protects your gums and lips before starting the treatment, thereby preventing any damage or burning of the soft tissue.
