Exercise 'key for under-fives'

A new set of guidelines issued by the government has reminded parents of the importance of ensuring children aged less than five get at least three hours of physical activity each day.

BBC News reports that a new set of recommendations jointly issued by chief medical officers (CMOs) in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland also advises reducing the amount of time youngsters spend strapped into car seats and buggies.

"For children that are not yet walking, there is considerable international evidence that letting children crawl, play or roll around on the floor is essential during early years," said England CMO Dame Sally Davies.

Elaine Hindal - director of the Children's Society's Campaign for Childhood - gave the report a cautious welcome, but called on the government to ensure low-income families have access to play facilities, childcare and healthcare professionals.

Last week, Slimming World spokeswoman Jenny Caven suggested regular physical activity could also help adults to beat stress as well as boosting their self-confidence in their appearance.
