Dubliners get new obesity surgery clinic

Irish patients who are morbidly obese could benefit from a new obesity surgery clinic in south Dublin.

Obesity Solutions hopes to carry out 100 procedures this year, each of which costs up to €20,000.

The clinic offers gastric banding, gastric ballooning, gastric bypass and stomach reduction surgery and could benefit many of the one in four Irish people who are classified as obese.

Chief executive Arno Van der Veek told the Sunday Business Post that the Irish market was targeted because of its high level of demand and the fact that many of the obesity surgery procedures carried out in Ireland are currently performed in unlicensed cosmetic surgery clinics.

"We are not a cosmetic surgery clinic," he insisted. "This is serious gastro-abdominal surgery and requires a serious and well-prepared approach."

The clinic is owned by Swiss company Q Medical and offers obesity surgery for patients between the ages of 18 and 65 with a body mass index (BMI) in excess of 30.
