Reaction to healthcare shortfalls
The Association of Medical Insurance
Intermediaries (AMII) makes the following points on the Office of Fair
Trading’s report on private healthcare - on concerns expressed by consumers as
to the level of extra payments sought (shortfall payments) from some
consultants not covered under their private medical insurance:
- Customers should contact their insurers before
starting treatment so they can make an informed decision about whether to
proceed with a particular consultant/anaesthetist
- Customers need to get the consultants and
anesthetists to be upfront about their fees before committing to treatment
- All insurers must make information about
shortfalls clear within their policy literature. Although many insurers do make
this clear, as there is so much to read when taking out a new policy it can
easily be overlooked.
