Parents need to remain vigilant in spotting the early signs of one of the
most feared childhood diseases.
Dr Hilary Jones, a GP who has appeared on numerous television shows since he
first offered advice on Sky TV in the late 80s, said that until a cure-all
vaccine is secured, attentive parents are the best form of treatment for
meningitis.
He explained that the infectious disease is one that parents fear, as they
know that once a child is affected it can develop with "devastating
rapidity".
"A healthy child one day can be on the point of expiring within 24
hours or be left with disability," stated the GP.
Dr Jones said that the government is allocating resources to finding a
vaccine for strains of the disease caused by the Meningococcal group B
bacteria.
According to Meningitis UK, the classic signs of the disease include a
headache, stiff neck and a dislike of bright lights.
