Elderly 'should continue to exercise'

Friends of the Elderly

Regular gentle exercise should be part of older people's daily routine.

This is the opinion of Friends of the Elderly chief executive Richard Furze, who believes that activities such as walking will provide physical and mental benefits this winter.

Keeping mobile will maintain the blood flow in the body, which in turn will help reduce the chances of the elderly falling over and injuring themselves, he said.

Mr Furze added that as well as improving physical health, exercise such as walking to the shops could help give the mental boost they need.

The expert explained that the companionship and independence people experience through such activities will be beneficial.

Age UK states there are many exercise classes which may be suitable to the elderly.

Aerobics, Pilates, martial arts and yoga were all found to have distinct advantages and individuals should check to see which exercise will be best for them.
