Dementia care should focus on keeping patients mentally active in ways that are specific
to the individual.
This is the opinion of the University of Sterling's director of Dementia
Services Development Centre professor June Andrews, who believes that care can
and should take many forms.
Professor Andrews said that some people will prefer traditional mental activities
such as reading and writing, while others may prefer to be more high-tech and
keep up to date with their social networking sites.
Patients must ensure they are not alone as this can make the condition
develop, the expert advised.
"There are groups that you can join with people who have the same
problems and fun and laughter can be found in working out ways to keep well,
together," Professor Andrews added.
Her comments came after a study published in BMC Medicine revealed that
cognitive exercises can help slow down the progression of dementia.
